WHAT IS THE GARBAGE DREAMS?

It is an initiative of citizens who work for the unique phenomenon of „lomtalanítás or lomizás” – that is a district or city-wide clean up – not to stop existing, but to become joyful community events; where, with the guidance of artist trainers, children of different backgrounds can create pieces of art out of garbage and street performances out of nothing together. The participants of the events get closer to art and to each other, they experience building value out of garbage, and can shape their environment.

We believe that the street is a perfect place for art education, for encounters, for creating together and for success, where all passers-by have a role – independently from where they come from and where they are going.

DO YOU KNOW...

• that in Hungary, around 50.000 people make a living out of the „informal collection of garbage - lomizás”? The livelihood of these people depends on “lomizás”.
• That the livelihood of these people – as opposed to several employees and public workers – does not pose extra burden on neither the state nor the taxpayers?

• That through recycling the garbage that people throw out, the people doing “lomizás” can decrease the ecological footprints of us all and thus reduce the pollution of the environment?
• That most of the people doing “lomizás” would not find any other, legal form of living for themselves?

That even though collecting garbage this way possesses value both from an economical, environmental and social point of view;
• according to the plans of the  Fővárosi Közterület-fenntartó Zrt. (the company responsible for the cleaning up of garbage in Budapest), in the future, garbage would be cleaned up and transported from the city, not according to districts but according to individual orders of the inhabitants, and in containers placed in the areas directly for that reason?

This plan...

Would mean extra costs for the taxpayers due to the increased costs of administration and logistics, and would jeopardize transparency. It would also deprive several thousands of people from their main source of living.
Would increase the surfeit of garbage dumpsites and environmental damage, and the costs related to the avertion of these problems.
Would you like that...

That a number of people equal to the population of Nagykanizsa would lose its source of income thus being forced to extreme poverty and criminality?

Or instead you would like that

the people doing “lomizás” continue their activities under more transparent and more cultivated circumstances as far as possible.
they can show to the inhabitants of other districts that the using the garbage again by citizens can be useful from an
environmental (recyling)
artistic (ReArt)
social (reintegration) point of view?

The aim of the initiators of the “Garbage Dreams” is that people doing “lomizás” continue their activities; improve their relations to other members of society; artist trainers are able to work with their children realizing cultural actions in public spaces.

We believe that rubbish and garbage can possess value; and those who have no other choice, can realize their dreams out of garbage as well.
